1941 REPLAY HIGHLIGHTS


May 22 - Red Sox beat Browns, 20-17-1/7-10-1. Every Boston starter except pitcher Wagner had at least 1 hit. Fox 2-3, 6 RBI.

May 30 - Bosox sweeps Yanks, taking nightcap, 16-18-2/5-7-2. Williamsn 4-4, 5 RBI, now batting .436. Bums sweep Giants as Reds sweep Cards. Bums and Cards now tied for 1st, 26-15.

June 1- Browns beat A's in opener, 21-21-2/8-11-0. Every starter, except catcher Ferrell, had at least 1 hit. Judnich hits for cycle, 5-5, 9 RBI, 2 doubles, triple, 2 homers, walk, 15 TB.

June 7 - Yanks come back from 6th inning 10-3 deficit and beat Browns, 15-16-1/10-16-3. DiMag hits for cycle, 4-4-, 6 RBI, 3 runs, 2B, 3B, homer. Sturm 4-5, 4 runs.

June 14 - Bums (33-20, .623) take 2nd straight from Cards (34-21, .618) and now lead NL by 5 points.

June 15 - Browns beat A's, 16-17-1/7-11-3. Every Brownie, except pitcher Harris, had at least 1 hit.

June 17 - Cronin breaks his 30 game hitting streak, going 0-1 in nightcap against Chisox. (He only had 1 AB in the actual game so I replaced him after 1 AB.)

June 20 - Braves beat Cubs, 16-21-1/3-7-2. Every starter, except pitcher Ericksson, had at least 1 hit. Eddie Miller 4-6, 4 RBI; Max West 3-4, 4 runs, 5 RBI.

June 22- Braves sweep Cubs, taking opener, 14-18-3/11-14-4, and nightcap, 19-26-1/6-12-2.
In nightcap, every starter, including pitcher Javery, had at least 1 hit. Cooney 6-6, 5 runs; Max West 4-5, 5 RBI, homer; Rowell 4-6, 5 RBI. Bums beat Bucs, 17-18-1/6-12-0.

June 25 - Bums beat Pirates for 5th straight as Braves beat Cards. Bums now back in 1st, 41-24, 1/2 up over Cards (41-25). Tribe beats Bosox, 15-18-0/5-7-2. Every Indian, including pitcher Al Smith, except Desautels, had at least 1 hit.

June 29 - Boston sweeps A's, taking opener, 14-19-1/1-6-0 and nightcap, 16-17-1/12-15-1.
Williams now batting .470. Cronin (now at .409) 4-6, 8 RBI, 3 homers in nightcap and 4-5 in opener.

June 30 - Bums (Wyatt 13-3) beat Phils for 10th straight as Cards drop one to Pirates. Brooklyn (46-24) now leads St Louis (43-27) by 3 games.

July 5- Boudreau singles with 2 out in top of 9th, breaking up Edgar Smith (Chisox) no-hitter. White Sox win 5-9-1/0-1-0. Tribe manages 2 walks. Tigers hit 3 homers in a row (Higgins, Sullivan and Croucher) in top of 9th as they beat Browns in opener, 1013-0/4-13-5.

July 11- Bosox beat Tigers, 23-23-1/1-4-3. Every Boston starter except pitcher (Grove) had at least 1 hit. Williams (.471) 4-4, 5 runs, 4 RBI, double, 2 homers, 11 TB. Jim Tabor 5-6, 6 RBI, 4 runs, double, homer.

July 15 - A's beat Detroit, 18-22-1/3-9-1. Every A's starter, including pitcher Lum Harris (4-5, 4 runs), had at least 1 hit. Bernie McCoy, 4-6, 7 RBI, 2 runs, triple.

July 16 - Yanks beat Tribe, 19-19-0/6-10-1. Every Yank starter, including pitcher Atley Donald, had at least 1 hit. DiMag 4-4, 4 RBI, 5 runs, homer. Joe Gordon 2-5, 6 RBI, homer, 4 runs, triple.

July 19 - Bosox sweep Browns, taking nightcap 23-19-3-2-3-3. Doerr 6 RBI, DiMaggio 5 RBI. Boston won opener 11-0.

July 23 - Browns beat A's, 22-23-6/8-13-0. Every Brown starter, including pitcher Galehouse, had at least 1 hit. McQuinn 5-6, grace 3-3, 3 runs, 5 RBI, homer.

July 24 - Yanks' Left Gomez (8-4, 3.95) 1 hits Tribe, 4-12-2/0-1-2. Only Tribe hit is top of 2nd double by Keltner. Only 1 Cleveland walk.

July 25 - Browns beat Nats, 16-18-3/4-9-4, scoring 14 runs in bottom of 8th. Every Nat starter had at least 1 hit.

July 26 - Yanks beat Chisox, 20-21-1/10-14-1. Every Chicago and Yank starter, except Yank pitcher Breuer, had at least 1 hit. Johnny Sturm 3-5, 7 RBI, 2 homers, 4 runs; Keller 3-5, 2 homers, 4 RBI; Rizzuto 5-5, 5 runs.

July 29 - Bums (Higbe 16-5, 1.55) beat Cards, 3-7-1/0-3-1. Brooklyn now up 3 1/2. Bosox beat Browns, 16-13-0/6-12-2. Jim Tabor 3-4, 8 RBI, 2 homers, 4 runs, triple.

July 31- Bosox drop 2 to Browns. 12-15-2/11-18-1 in 1st game (Williams 4-5, double, homer, 3 RBI, batting .478). 0-2 in nightcap, now at .472.

August 2- Yanks sweep Browns, coming back from 9-0 deficit in nightcap (bottom of 4th), to win 13-14-2/9-9-3. DiMag (.368) 4-5, 4 RBI, homer in nightcap.

August 17 - Bums drop 2 to Braves but Cards are swept by Pirates and remain 1 1/2 behind.

August 21 - Bums lose 5-4 to Cubs in 11 as Cards beat Phils, 8-3 to take over 1st place by 1/2 game.

August 22 - Cards again beat Phils as Bums lose to Cubs. Cards now 1 1/2 up.

August 26 - Cards sweep Bums and now lead by 2 1/2. Giants and Reds split, with NY taking nightcap, 17-17-1/2-8-3. Every Giant starter, except pitcher (Bowman) had at least 1 hit.

August 27 - Bums (Higbe) and Reds' (VanderMeer) pitch 1-hitters against each other, as Bums finally prevail, 1-1-1/0-1-0.

August 29 - Bums' Wyatt (20-8, 2.18) becomes 1st 20 game winner, as he beats Giants in 12 inning complete game, 3-9-1/2-11-1. Winning run scores in top of 12th on 4 base error by Mel Ott on Dixie Walker fly. Bums now 2 1/2 out.

August 30 - Cards (Warneke 19-7, 2.20) beats Reds, as Giants sweep Bums. Cards now up by 4. Bosox beat A's, 16-17-1/6-7-2. Williams 2-4, .465.

August 31 - Bums fall to 5 out as they lose to Giants while Cards beat Reds (in 11).

September 1 - Yanks sweep A's as magic number drops to 3 (Washington sweeps 2nd place Bosox). NY takes nightcap, 17-17-1/4-8-1. Every NY starter except Priddy had at least 1 hit. Selkirk 2 homers (1 GS), 6 RBI.

September 3 - Bosox's Charlie Wagner (13-7, 3.02) 1 hits Yanks, 8-9-1/2-1-2. Only NY hit is Keller homer w/2 out in top of 9th.

September 4 - Cubs sweep Cards (nightcap is rained out after 5) as Bums move to 2 back. Feller (19-14, 3.23) fails to win his 20th for the 4th time in a row, as he loses to Tigers (Newhouser, 8-13, 5.70), 7-6-1/0-3-1.

September 6 - Yanks clinch a tie as they beat Bosox, 9-7.

September 7 - Yanks clinch AL, as Gomez (10-8, 4.74) beats Bosox 4-1. Bums' Higbe (20-8, 2.35) wins his 20th, beating Giants in opener, 6-3. Giants' Melton beats Wyatt in nightcap. Cards sweep Reds and move 3 up. Early Wynn makes his ML debut, losing to A's in nightcap, 8-12-0/7-15-2. Wynn gives up 8 runs in CG, but only 2 are earned.

September 9 - Tigers beat Bosox, 12-14-4/11-14-2. Williams (.467) 3-5, 2 homers, 7 RBI. Feller (20-14, 3.28) finally wins his 20th, after 4 unsuccessful attempts, as he beats A's, 8-5 in complete game.

September 11 - Cards' Ernie White (12-8, 2.13) beats Bums' Freddie Fitzsimmons 6-3, 1.73) 4-1 to move Cards 4 up. Nats' Ken Chase (12-10, 5.13) wins both games of doubleheader against Tribe (first game in relief).

September 12 - Nats' Early Wynn (1-1, 2.37) wins his 1st major league game, beating Tribe in 11 inning CG, 5-4.

September 13 - Enos Slaughter returns from DL to break up Bums' Wyatt's (23- 9, 2.12) no-hitter in bottom of 8th with 1 out single. Bums win 7-4 and move to 2 back. Cards and Bums split season series, 11-11. Tribe beats Nats, 19-25-3/8-13-0. Heath 5-7, 5 RBI, Gee Walker 5-5, 5 runs. Every Tribe starter, including pitcher Chubby Dean, had at least 1 hit, and EVERY starter had at least 1 RBI.

September 14 - Bums (Higbe 21-8, 2.38) beat Reds 6-2 as Giants (Hubbell, Melton) sweep Cards. Bums move to 1/2 back.

September 15 - Bums (Johnny Allen, 3-7, 5.17) beat Reds 9-2 to move into tie with Cards (Bums 90-52, .634; Cards 89-51, .636).

September 16 - Bums lose to Reds as Cards (Hal White, 13-8, 2.17) beat Giants to move 1 up.

September 17 - Bums beat Pirates, 7-13-2/6-13-0. Bums lead 6-0 until bottom of 6th when Pitts. Starts to comeback. Pirates tie score in bottom of 8th but Medwick homers in top of 9th for the victory. Cards sweep Braves to move 1 1/2 up. Musial makes his ML debut, going 3-3,1 RBI, 2 runs.

September 21 - Bums sweep Phils as Cards split with Cubs. Bums move to 1/2 back with 5 remaining.

September 23 - Cards split with Pirates, moving Bums into 1st place tie (97-53). Yanks win their 100th game (100-49) as they clobber A's, 17-18-1/0-4-1. Ruffing (19-2, 2.03) pitches CG and goes 3-5 with 2 homers, 4 RBI and 3 runs. NY hits 6 homers (Ruffing 2, Silvestri, Gordon, Priddy and Henrich 1 each).

September 24 - Bums lose to Braves as Cards beat Pirates and move 1 up.

September 26 - Nats stop Joe DiMaggio's 26 game hitting streak. Joe 0-2 with 2 walks.

September 28 (last day of regular season) - Bums come back to beat Phills, 4-8-1/3-8-1 as Cards lose to Cubs, 7-12-2/5-11-1 on 3 Cub runs in bottom of 8th. Bums and Cards finish 100-54. Ted Williams finishes at .448 but has 5 sacrifice flies that would produce a batting average of .444 using the '41 scoring rules (SFs counted as ABs).

October 1 - Bums win opener in 20 innings, beating Yanks 8-7.
