May 30 - Giants (Hartung CG) beat Phils 15-14-1/1-4-4. Hartung 3-4, 3 runs. Cubs (Kush) beat Reds in game 2 of twinbill 16-16-0/0-8-0. Pirates come back from 4 run deficit to win 13-10-0/8-13-1 over Cards in game 2 of doubleheader.

May 31 - Yanks come back from 6 run deficit in top of first to win 9-13-1/7-10-2 by scoring 7 in bottom of 4th. Tommy Byrne pitches 6.2 innings of no run/3 hit relief. Yanks move into first place, 1 game up (see Boston game below). Giants beat Bums in second game of twinbill 15-18-0/2-4-0. Willard Marshall 4-5. Swede Hansen 4 hitter, 2 runs. June 3 - Red Sox beat Browns with 15 walks, 15-15-1/3-7-1. Reds beat Giants 12-18-3/9-18-0. Every starting Red had at least 1 hit. Braves beat Pitts with 9 runs in first 3 innings (7 in top of 1st), 14-19-1/1-6-1. Every Boston starter had at least 1 hit.

June 4 - Bosox beat Browns in first game of doubleheader, 11-17-0-4-9-1. Every Boston starter except pitcher and Pesky (1-6) had at least 2 hits. Boston beats Browns in nightcap, 17-24-0/0-7-0. Stephens 5-5 plus walk and 4 runs, in 6 PA. Every Boston starter has at least 2 hits, except for 1B Jake Jones (1-4). Peksy 4-6, 4 runs. A's (Scheib) beats Chisox 11-9-0/2-7-1. Joost 2 homers.

June 5 - Yanks (Embree) beat Browns 11-15-0/0-6-1. Cards' Dickson 2 hits Dodgers, 7-16-1/0-2-1. Giants (Lee) beats Reds 17-19-0/0-6-3. Buddy Kerr 4-6, 4 runs.

June 7 - Cards (Munger) beats Phils, 14-19-2/3-7-1. Every Cards' starter had at least 2 hits, except Slaughter (1-3) and Schoendienst (1-4). Every starter also scored at least 1 run. Braves beat Cubs 15-23-1/5-7-0. Every Braves starter had at least 1 hit, Dark had 4.

June 9 - A's Scheib beats Tigers 11-12-0/0-5-1.

June 10 - Cleve (Feller) beats Bosox 15-18-0/3-7-4.

June 11 - Boston's Kramer hits 2 homers and beats Chisox 13-14-1/2-6-7(!). Cass Michaels had 4 errors. Each Boston starter had at least 1 hit. First place Braves beat second place Cards in 11, 3-7-2/2-10-0 on Dark homer in top of 11th.

June 13 - Giants come from behind 2-1 to beat Cards with 2 out in top of ninth on back to back homers from Sid Gordon (his second of game) and Mize. A's sweep Browns in twinbill, with Scheib pitching 5 hitter in nightcap, 14-18-0/0-5-3. Every A's starter had at least 1 hit.

June 15 - Tribe beats Boston in 11 innings, 4-12-1/3-11-1. Tebbetts 4-5. Giants come back with 6 in bottom of 9th to beat Pirates 9-11-1/7-12-0. Winning hit was pinch-hit 3 run homer by Willard Marshall.

June 16 - Yanks (Reynolds) beat Chisox 15-20-2/5-8-2. Henrich 5-6, triple, homer and 4 RBI. Bobby Brown 4-6, Keller grand slam, 5 RBI.

June 17 - June 17 - Pirates (Vic Lombardi) pitches 3 hitter against Giants, 15-19-0/0-3-2. Westlake 3-5, 2 homers, 6 rbi. A’s beat Tigers 17-18-3/10-12-0. Every starting A had at least 1 hit, Majeski 4-5. Vico (Detroit) also 4-5. Cubs’ Jeffcoat breaks up Spahn no hitter with 2 outs in top of 8th with a single. Braves win 4-5-0/0-1-0. Cleve beats Boston in 12 innings, 5-11-1/4-14-0 on single by Eddie Robinson and take over first place:

June 18 - Cleveland scores 5 in bottom of 7th and 11 in bottom of 8th to beat A’s, 17-16-2/3-3-2. Keltner 3-5, 5 RBI.

June 18 - Chisox beat Nats 12-11-3/10-14-4.

June 18 - Phils beat Pirates in 12, 11-24-1/10-19-2. Robin Roberts’s first ML appearance (no decision, 5 runs 11 hits, 5.2 IP). Harry Walker (Phils), Blattnik (Phils), Murtaugh and Westlake each had 4 hits.

June 19 - Yanks beat Browns 17-15-3/5-14-1. Every Yank starter, except the pitcher Lopat had at least 1 hit.

June 20 - Braves blow 7-2 lead to Reds (who tie them 10-10 in 9th) in nightcap of doubleheader but then come back to win 11-13-1/10-16-3 in bottom of ninth.

June 21 - A’s beat Browns in 12, 8-17-0/6-19-2. A’s Sam Chapman 4-6, Browns’ Jerry Priddy 5-7. Reds beat Phils, 14-22-0/9-12-3. Phils’ Hatton 4-7, homer, Sauer 5-6, 6 rbi, 2 homers.

June 22 - A’s Scheib beats Browns 15-20-2/2-9-1 to win his 10th (ERA 1.55). Scheib gets 4 hits(4-5), Joost 4-6.

June 23 - Yanks move into fist place tie w/Boston (Cleve now .5 back) by beating Tribe 11-14-0/5-9-1, climaxed by top of 8th 2 out 3 run dinger by Henrich. Rizzuto and Lindell also homered. Robin Roberts wins his first ML game with a CG over the Reds, 10-14-0/2-8-0. Roberts bats 3-4.

June 24 - Yanks blow lead and lose to Tribe in 13, 2-13-0/1-6-2 on Joe Tipton single off Porterfield. Cleve and Boston now tied for first, Yanks .5 behind. Rex Barney pitches no-hitter (2 walks) in nightcap of twinbill against Pirates, 1-3-1/0-0-0. Jackie homer to lead off bottom of 9th wins it. Braves come back from 10-9 deficit to beat Cards 11-17-0/10-12-2 on bottom of the ninth 2 run homer by Al Dark. Red Sox beat Chisox 15-18-2/5-10-0 in first game of doubleheader. Doerr 3-5, 2 homers, 5 rbi. In nightcap, White Sox come back from 10-2 deficit to tie game at 11 with 4 in bottom of ninth and then go on to win with 3 in bottom of 11th (after Red Sox scored 2 in top of 11th). Ted Williams had 2 3-run dingers, 6 rbi.

June 25 - Dodgers beat Cards 8-14-2/3-7-3 to reach .500 (28-28). They were already in 4th place (13 behind 1st place Braves). Cleve (Lemon) beats Nats, 18-18-2/2-6-2. Every Indian starter had at least 1 hit. Keltner 5-6, 4 runs and 4 rbi.

June 26 - Pirates come back from 5-2 deficit to beat 1st place Braves in 11 on 3 run homer in top of 11th by Max West.

June 27 - Bums come back from3-2 deficit to beat Cards in 10 and win their 11th in a row (4-12-2/3-10-0)on Spider Jorgenson squeeze in bottom of 10th. Red Sox come back in nightcap of twin-bill from 9-5 deficit with 9 runs in top of 8th to beat Browns 16-27-0/11-20-0. Vern Stephens 5-5, homer, 7 RBI. Tribe sweeps, coming back from 2-0 deficit in bottom of 9th to win 3-2 over Nats, 3-8-1/2-5-2. Winning run scores on error by Dave Thompson (opposition relief pitcher) on throw from first baseman. Bill Wight goes distance form Chisox in nightcap of twinbill, giving up 17 walks and not striking out anyone in losing 6-12-2/3-3-1.

June 29 - Browns beat Chisox in 11, 9-16-2-/8-12-3, coming back with 2 in bottom of 11th after White Sox scored go ahead in top of inning.

June 30 - Yanks come back to beat Bosox, 6-11-2/5-7-2, with 2 in bottom of 9th , on Berra single, Henrich walk, Pesky throwing error and Billy Johnson single, after Boston took lead with 1 in top of 9th. Cleveland and Boston now tied, with Yanks .5 out.

July 1 - Yanks blow 6-0 lead to Bosox who tie then with 5 in top of 9th and then win in 12, 8-10-0/7-16-1. Williams 2 homers. Boston now tied with Cleveland, Yanks 1.5 back.

July 2 - Cards beat Reds 16-23-0/2-8-0. Musial 4-5, 2 homers, double, 6 RBI.

July 3 - Giants beat Bums in 10, 11-14-3/10-14-1. Willard Marshall 4-6, Walker Cooper 4 RBI. Braves (Spahn CG) beat Phils 21-26-1/1-6-3. Dark 5-7, 4 runs, 4 RBI; Bob Elliot 3-5, 2 homers, 4 runs, 4 RBI; Masi 4-7.

July 4 - A’s come back to beat Bosox in 10, 5-9-2/4-6-0 on homer by pitcher Carl Scheib. Scheib had no hitter until 6th, leading 2-0, then Boston got 3 in bottom of 6th to take lead, eventually going up 4-2. A’s tied game in 9th and won it in 10th. Cubs’ Bob Rush pitches 11 inning CG to beat Pirates in nightcap of doubleheader, 3-7-1/2-5-1. Standings are now:

July 5 - Yanks beat first place Bosox 12-12-1/1-5-0. Hank Bauer hits first ML homer. NY blows 5-1 lead in nightcap as Boston scores 5 in bottom of 9th to win 6-8-0/5-11-0. Shea goes distance to lose. July 6 - Lou Brissie (A’s) pitches 2 hitter (singles, 12 K’s) to beat Nats, 2-8-0/0-2-0.

July 7 - Browns beat Tigers 15-22-1/13-17-0. Zarilla and Dillinger (SL) 4 hits, Lipon (Detroit) 4 hits.

July 9 - Cards beat Pirates, 19-22-1/4-14-1 with 7 homers, including 2 by Staley (including a grand slam and 5 RBI) and 2 by Don Lang. Musial 5-5 with 5 runs, a homer and 10 TB.

July 11 - Tommy Byrne pitches 1 hitter (8 walks/ 8 K’s) against Nats, 3-7-0/1-1-0. Tigers beat Chisox 20-23-29-10-0 with 13 in bottom of 1st. Hoot Evers 6-6, Pat Mullin 5-6.

July 17 - Duke Snider hits his first ML homer against Howie Fox of Reds in first game of doubleheader. He hits his second in the nightcap.

 

July 21 - Yanks beat first place Tribe 16-25-1/14-17-1. Yanks led 5-3 after 3, behind 9-6 after 4, tied at 12 after 5, tied at 14 after 6.5, and then ahead 15-14 after 7 (they go ahead on Silvera PH single, Brown double, and McQuinn ground-out). Rizzuto 6-6, Henrich 4 RBI, homer. Mitchell, Allie Clark, and Keltner each had 4 hits. Gordon and Keltner each had 2 homers (one of Gordon’s was a GS). Frank Hiller pitches 4 hitter for sweep (4-7-3/1-4-1). Berra homer, 2 RBI. Red Sox now up .5 over Tribe and 1 over NY. Red Sox beat White Sox in first game of doubleheader, 20-22-0/2-5-0 with 10 runs in bottom of 1st. Every Boston starter except Tebbets (0-5) had at least 2 hits, including pitcher (Dobson). Williams 3-4, 4 RBI. Braves come back to beat Reds in 15, 4-12-2/2-12-1 on Jeff Heath 2 run homer in top of 15th.

July 22- Kinder pitches no-hitter (2 walks) in nightcap of twin-bill sweep as Boston beats Chicago 4-6-1/0-0-2.

July 26 - Yanks (56-33) take doubleheader from Chisox and move to only .5 back of Boston (57-33).

July 29 - Yanks (9-1 in last 10) move half game into first, beating Browns while A’s (Fowler) beats Tribe to move ahead of them into 3rd (3.5 out).

August 6 - Braves (Spahn) beat Reds (Kent Peterson) 19-18-0/3-6-3. Peterson gives up 12 walks, 16 runs (15 earned) in 6 innings. Phil Masi 4-5 with homer, double, 3 runs and 5 RBI.

August 7 - Bums come back to tie Reds 5-5 in 9th of nightcap in twinbill but then Reds score 10 runs in top of 11th to win 15-11-1/5-12-2. 7 of the runs were off reliever Minner.

August 8 - Red Sox (Parnell) beat White Sox 16-18-1/2-6-2 in first game of doubleheader. Williams 4-4, 5 RBI, 4 runs, 2 homers. Now hitting .410.

August 11 - Yanks lose 2nd straight to Boston and drop to 2nd, .5 behind. Galehouse beats Reynolds, 5-9-2/1-5-1.

August 17 - Yanks beat Nats 8-11-1/5-9-1 to tie Red Sox for 1st. A’s 2.5 behind. Reds’ Wehmeier (Tired) wins 1st game of season (1-16) by pitching final 5 innings in 13 inning game vs. Pirates (6-13-2/5-13-1). Gives up 5 walks, several intentional.

August 18 - Yanks’ Billy Johnson, DiMaggio and Cliff Mapes hit back-to-back-to-back homers in 9th off reliever Junior Wooten (normally not a pitcher but did pitch 2.0 innings in actual ’48) in 15-17-0/1-5-2 win over Nats. A’s Scheib (16-5/2.50) beats Bosox 3-8-2/1-6-1 to put Boston 1 game behind Yanks. Doerr’s 2 out 9th inning homer ruins shutout.

August 19 - Yanks blow 7 run lead to Nats who score 8 in bottom of 4th off Reynolds to win 10-13-1/7-11-0. Boston then beats A’s to tie Yanks for 1st.

August 23 - Phils’ Roberts beats Reds 23-25-2/4-7-4. Every Phil starter had at least 1 hit; Putsy Caballero was 6-7 with 3 runs, 2 RBI and a double. Reds’ starter Ewell Blackwell gave up 11 runs and 13 hits in 5 IP.

August 24 - DiMag homers in his first 3 ABs 96 RBI), and then walks the other 2 ABs as Yanks (Lopat) beats Chisox 12-14-1/6-9-0. Nats beat Browns 19-16-1/4-10-2.

August 25 - Cleveland’s Lemon beats Bosox 4-11-0/2-7-0 to move Yanks into sole possession of 1st, 1 game over Boston, 4.5 over the A’s, and 5.5 over the Tribe. Giants come back from 9-3 3rd inning deficit against Cubs to win 16-18-2/14-21-1. Score was tied at 11 in bottom of 7th. Lockman 4-6, Lucky Lohrke 4-4.

August 26 - Boston’s Parnell beats Tribe’s Bearden 3-8-0/0-2-0 to put Sox (76-43) back into 1st place tie w/Yanks (75-42) who lost to Chisox’s Papish 4-1.

August 27 - Yanks drop twin-bill to Tribe (Feller and Gromek) while Boston loses to Chisox. Boston in 1st, half-game ahead of Yanks.

August 28 - Yanks beat Indians in 10, 13-14-2/12-15-3 by scoring 2 in bottom of 10th on Bobby Brown squeeze (hit). Yanks blow 7-0 lead after 3 and 11-8 lead after 7. Brown 4-4, with 4 RBI. Chisox’ Bill Wight (now 3-20) beats Red Sox’s Kinder 4-9-1/1-5-0 to put Boston .5 behind Yanks for 1st.

August 31 - Yanks come back to beat Browns 6-5 in 13 innings on homer by Henrich in bottom of 13th. DiMag hit 2 run homer in bottom of 8th to tie the game. Yanks are Boston tied 79-45.

September 1 - Braves beat Reds 18-19-2/2-12-3 in first game of doubleheader. Jeff Heath 4-5, Spahn (Tired) CG.

September 4 - Nats beat Yanks 14-22-0/4-9-0. Every starter has at least 2 hits except pitcher (Candini who has one). Red Sox (Kinder) beats A’s 7-12-0/1-6-0 to move into undisputed possession of 1st place by ½ game (81-46 vs. 81-47).

September 5 - Nats (Hudson; Yost 4 RBI) beat Yanks (Reynolds) again, 9-10-0/7-13-2. Bosox beat A’s again, 8-11-0/7-12-2 on 3 run homer by Dom DiMaggio (3-5, 4 RBI) and 2 run homer by Vern Stephens to move 1.5 ahead of Yanks and 4 ahead of A’s.

September 6 - Yanks (Raschi, Lopat) split doubleheader with A’s while Boston (Parnell, Kramer) sweeps twin-bill with Nats. Boston now 2.5 up. Braves (Spahn) beats Bums in first game of doubleheader, 25-19-3/3-8-1. Miksis pitches final 4 innings for Brooklyn. Boston hits 5 homers, including 2 by Conaster and 1 by Spahn. Every Boston starter had at least 1 hit. Braves also wins nightcap 22-29-0/4-6-1 with Miksis also pitching (6.1 IP). Again every Boston starter has at least 1 hit. Stanky 5-5 (7 RBI), Holmes 4-6.

September 8 - Red Sox (Dobson) beats Yanks (Shea) 2-4-0/1-4-1 to move 3.5 up. A’s (Kellner, Scheib) take twin-bill from Nats to move within 1 of Yanks. A’s now 4.5 out.

September 9 - Yanks come back to beat Boston 7-13-2/6-6-0 on homers by Tommy Byrne and Yogi (Yogi’s won it in top of 8th). Yanks back to 2.5 out.

September 10 - Sox (Kramer) shuts out Yanks 5-8-0/0-6-1. Sox back to 3.5 game lead. Tigers’ Houtteman pitches 7 scoreless innings (1 unearned run) in relief to beat Tribe 2-11-0/3-9-3 in 16 innings. Tribe falls to 6.5 behind.

September 11 - A’s (84-52) Fowler and Marchildon take 2 from Nats and move into tie w/Yanks (83-51), 3.5 out. Boston (Galehouse, Parnell) sweep A’s (McCahan, Coleman) in twin-bill to move 4 up over Yanks, 5.5 over A’s. Braves (Sain, Spahn) sweep Phills in doubleheader, winning nightcap 24-23-2/4-7-2. Every Brave starter had at least 1 hit. Salkeld and Dark had 4, each with 5 RBI. Spahn 3-6, 4 RBI and homer.

September 12 - Boston (Dobson) beats A’s (Scheib), 4-12-0/3-8-0 to remain 4 ahead of NY, 6.5 ahead of A’s. Browns take first game of doubleheader against Indians by scoring 8 in top of 11th to win 13-17-1/5-9-2. Tribe now 8.5 back, in 4th. Bob Feller wins 20th (first 20 gamer this year) in nightcap, after giving up 7 runs in the first 7 innings on Hank Edwards’ 3 run homer in bottom of 7th.

September 14 - Lopat pitches 6-8-0/0-3-0 over Tribe’s Lemon. Billy Johnson has 2 homers, 4 RBI.

September 15 - Bosox (Kramer) beat Chisox 12-11-0/2-8-1 on grand slams by Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr. A’s (Fowler) beats Browns 22-24-2/3-7-2. Every A’s starter had at least 1 hit. Fain 4 hits (4-6), 9 RBI. McCoskey 4 hits (4-4), 4 RBI. Bums take doubleheader, coming back on Campy 2 run homer in bottom of 9th to beat Reds in nightcap, 9-12-0/8-12-1. Braves clinch tie when Spahn wins 18th against Cubs, 2-6-0/0-3-1.

September 16 - Boston (Parnell) beats Browns 23-24-1/1-5-0. Every Sox’ starter except Parnell had at least 1 hit. Tebbets had 3 homers, 6 RBI. Stephens also had 6 RBI. Yanks come back from 6-4 deficit in nightcap but blow game (Shea) to Tigers in bottom of 10th, 7-11-1/6-6-0. Cleveland (Bearden) beats Nats (Wynn), 19-20-0/2-5/2. Every Tribe starter had at least 1 hit. Bearden 3-5, 3 runs, 5 RBI, homer. Boudreau 4-5, 3 runs.

September 17 - Yanks (Byrne) beat Tigers 18-19-0/5-8-1. Yogi 5-5, 4 runs. Braves clinch by beating Pirates 4-11-2/3-12-0 in 12 innings on pinch hit by Sibby Sisti in bottom of 12th.

September 21 - Tigers beat Boston 10-18-2/9-13-0 on single by Dizzy Trout in bottom of 8th. Every Tiger except starter Grey had at least 1 hit; Dick Wakefield 4-5 w/3 runs. Boston now 3.5 up over NY.

September 22 - Yanks beat Chisox 6-12-0/5-3-1 coming back from 5-2 deficit with 4 in top of 8th while Cleveland (Feller, Kleiman) beats Boston (Dobson trying for his 20th) with a run in bottom of 9th, 3-6-0/2-7-1 on Allie Clark SF. Yanks move to 2.5 out with 9 left. Detroit’s Newhouser wins his 20th (20-7), beating the A’s, 11-13-3/8-10-2. A’s now in 4th, ½ behind Cleveland, 6.5 out.

September 23 - Yanks (Lopat) beat Chisox 13-15-1-/2-9-4 whole A’s lose to Tigers 6-17-2/4-9-0. Yanks now 2 out.

September 24 - Yanks (Raschi) move to within 1 of Boston, beating Sox 11-18-1/4-11-1 on homers by Henrich and DiMag (back-to-back in 1st) plus homer by Billy Johnson and 5 runs in bottom of 7th. Every Yank starter had at least 1 hit. DiMag 3-4, 3 RBI, 2 runs, double, Henrich 3-5, 2 RBI, 3 runs.

September 25 - Yanks move into 94-54 tie w/Boston after Reynolds beats Kramer 3-7-1/1-4-0 on 2 run homer by George McQuinn in bottom of 6th. Boston is 3-7 over last 10 games, Yanks and Cleveland are 8-2.

September 26 - Yanks (Byrne, Page) complete sweep of Boston, coming back from 5-1 deficit to score 4 in bottom of 2nd to win 10-10-0/8-12-2. Boston had tying runs on in top of 9th but Page held them. Henrich 3-5 with a homer. Yanks now 1 up. Tigers’ Newhouser wins his 21st as he 4 hits Cleveland (Feller), 4-10-0/0-4-0. Magic Number is now 1 to eliminate Cleveland.

September 28 - A’s (Scheib wins 19th) beat Yanks, 8-11-0/4-7-1. Fain 4 RBI.

Nats’ Scarborough beats Boston 3-5-2/1-4-1 so Yanks remain 1 up.

September 29 - Yanks (Porterfield, Reynolds) beat A’s, 6-12-3/1-9-1. Berra (2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Henrich 3-5. Boston (Kinder) beats Nats (Masterson), 14-14-1/5-10-0. Every Boston starter except Kinder had at least 1 hit. Williams 2-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI, triple. Stephens homer. Cleve’s Feller pitches 15-13-0/0-5-1 shutout over Chicago to win his 21st. Every Indian starter had at least 1 hit. Gordon 4 RBI, 2 homers.

September 30 - Yanks (Lopat) beat A’s, 10-12-1/1-8-0 on homers by Henrich 3 RBI), Johnson and DiMag. Magic Number now 2. Boston beats Nats, 5-8-0/4-10-0 on homer by Williams in bottom of 8th. Williams now at .396.

October 2 - Yanks (Byrne) clinch by beating Red Sox (Kramer), 4-8-0/0-3-0. Billy Johnson knocks in all 4 Yank runs, going 2-4, 4 RBI, double, homer and 3 runs.

October 3 - Red Sox‘s Dobson wins his 20th in season finale over Yanks, 10-19-4/3-6-1. Williams goes 4-4 with double and triple but winds up at .399 (.3988). A’s Carl Scheib wins his 20th, coming in in relief to best Nats, 8-9-0/6-10-2. A’s score 6 in bottom of 8th to win.
